What: Behavioral Finance: A Primer with Pragmatics

Where?: Association of Family and Conciliation Courts – Texas Chapter Annual Conference, Houston Texas

When?: October 15-16, 2010

Why?: This workshop will offer participants an overview of the emerging field of behavioral finance as it applies to divorce and divorce negotiations.  Accomplishing a full financial settlement in divorce negotiations is tied to better outcomes for children, fewer disputes related to children and fewer child custody disputes.  Thus, understanding barriers to financial settlements and having tools to overcome these barriers that are based in an understanding of psychology and emotional styles is vital.

What: Behavioral Finance: A Primer with Pragmatics

Where?: California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) – San Diego Chapter Luncheon

When?: TBD

Why?: The field of behavioral finance has developed with a goal of understanding and explaining how human emotions and cognitive errors–errors in logical thought processes–influence the movement of stock markets. While the field was originally promulgated by academia and by those interested in increasing their profits in the markets, analysis of this field’s principles shows that there is a broad applicability to a variety of everyday settings and decisions. The study of behavioral finance tells us that humans often become irrational in the face of the social, cognitive, and emotional factors that affect psychological functioning during the decision-making process. Robert A. Simon, Ph.D. and I are applying the principles of Behavioral Finance to every day financial decisions facing average Americans and teaching Mental Health professionals how to use our application and experience to positively affect financial decisions that may otherwise become irrational in the face of emotions.
